CATARACT SCHOOL DECEMBER NEWSLETTER

December 2, 2009

November was an exciting month at Cataract School.  The Veteran's Day Program was wonderful as students honored men and women who have served and are currently serving our country.   Command Sergeant Major Dennis Martinson was our guest speaker.  We would like to thank him and all the veterans from different branches of service for attending our presentation.  Second and third grade students went on a field trip to Walmart as they worked on their money unit, helping out our community boys and girls at the same time.  They purchased coats, snowpants, boots, hats and gloves for Sparta area children with a Grant from the Sparta Public Education Foundation.  On that day they also visited the Museum and learned how a child in the 1880's lived.  Many lessons were covered with this activity.

Students and staff are looking forward to the Christmas season and all the activities ahead.

Grandparent's Day is December 17th.  All Grandparents are invited to visit their grandchild at school.  You can enjoy a sing-along and reading books with your grandchild while having a snack!  Then Sara Slayton will tell a story!   Please return the sign-up sheet by Dec. 9th.  We hope most grandparents can attend!

December Music News - We really improved our singing skills during November, singing songs of our country, veteran's songs, turkey and even some snow songs. We will continue learning new repertoire singing seasonal songs and traditional carols. The boys and girls will be performing for you on Dec. 17th at the sing-along. I hope you all find time to sing carols together at home or in the car.

Kindergarten will be mainly singing and doing some movement songs. They will be finishing working with tempo. 1sts and 2nds will be working with form, listening for same and different and going on to tempo.

Check out the many concerts being held at Sparta Senior High. Enjoy the music of the season!

Happy Holidays,               Mrs. Bright

DECEMBER ART NEWS

Greetings from the Art Room

The Holiday Season will be our motivation for the art classes for the next few weeks. We will be talking about the different sights of the Holidays and different traditions and doing projects that go along with that. Gingerbread boys and girls, gingerbread houses, and painted Christmas trees will be some of the projects the students will work on.

The art room is always a busy place. Ask your child what they have been working on in the art room. Encourage your child to use art supplies at home.

Please feel free to contact me at school or e-mail. bmoorhead@spartan.org                                                        Happy Holidays to everyone!

Mrs. Moorhead

Library News - In the LMC this month, the students will be continuing to learn about the different types of genres. We will also be reading some great winter books. Last month the Pre K/Kindergarten group read books by Dr. Seuss, Kevin Henkes, Judy Schachner, and other fantastic authors located in our library. Please make sure your child is returning any overdue materials. And remember, "Children are made readers on the laps of their parents." — Emilie Buchwald

Happy reading,

Ms. Keller

Winter Clothing - We require everyone to bring boots, snowpants, hats, mittens, etc. to school each day.  We will be having snow on the playground and it is important to keep the students dry and warm when they are outside for recess.  Boots are needed in order to play on the playground, as it is a safety concern for children to walk in the school with wet shoes.  If your child does not wear boots, they will need to stand close to the building at recess and will not be allowed to play on the playground.  (A second pair of shoes are not considered boots!)  An extra pair of mittens and socks kept in a plastic bag in the student's backpack comes in handy for a quick change after first recess.  If students do not have snowpants, they will still go outside but will be required to stay on the blacktop.  This is why it is important for your child to be properly dressed for the weather. Please label all clothing items and boots.

As it gets colder, the classrooms may feel cooler to your child/children. They should try to dress with long sleeves or else layer their clothes so if they are too warm or too cool, they can adjust.

Classroom parties will be on Monday, December 21. 2009.   Room mothers will contact you if they need your help for this holiday.  Each classroom teacher will send a note home soon about what they are doing in their room.

Cataract Staff would like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season!
